Hungrrr vs Flipdish: Which Restaurant Ordering Platform Is Better?

The short answer

For most restaurants, Flipdish. Hungrrr does online ordering and branded apps, and does them fine. Flipdish does those too, plus the POS, kiosks, AI phone ordering, loyalty and marketing automation, all in one system. If a direct ordering channel is the only thing you're missing, the gap between them is small. If you're thinking about anything past that, it gets big quickly.

What is Hungrrr?

Hungrrr is a UK-based white-label online ordering platform. A restaurant or takeaway gets its own branded app and website ordering, so customers order direct instead of going through Just Eat or Deliveroo.

The core product is:

  • Branded iOS and Android apps
  • Website ordering
  • Basic promotions and discount codes
  • An order management dashboard

For a small independent takeaway that wants customers ordering direct, Hungrrr works. Some single-site takeaways need exactly that and nothing more.

The trouble starts when the operator wants ordering to talk to the POS. Or wants kiosks, or a second and third site, or marketing that runs off customer data. Hungrrr wasn't built for those, so each one ends up as a separate product from a separate supplier.

What is Flipdish?

Flipdish is restaurant technology used by restaurants, takeaways, cafés, QSRs and multi-location groups in the UK, Ireland and further afield. It covers:

  • Restaurant POS - cloud-based, for one site or many
  • Online ordering - branded website ordering with no commission
  • Branded mobile apps - white-labelled iOS and Android apps with loyalty, push notifications and order history
  • Self-service kiosks - hardware and software, mainly for QSR and fast casual
  • AI phone agent - takes phone orders without anyone on staff picking up
  • AI marketing - automated campaigns built from what customers have actually ordered
  • Kitchen Display System - one kitchen screen for orders from every channel
  • Loyalty - points and rewards built into the app and ordering

These are one system, not eight products sold together. A website order, an app order, a kiosk order and a phone order all land in the same kitchen queue and go through the same POS. Nobody re-keys anything.

The top two rows are where the platforms overlap. Everything below them is either Flipdish only or Flipdish doing more.

The last row is easy to skip past. Hungrrr's support covers the UK. Flipdish covers the UK and Ireland. If you have sites in Ireland, or plan to open one, check that before you sign anything.

POS integration: where the gap is clearest

Hungrrr has no POS. A restaurant using it runs a separate point of sale and has to connect the two, either with an integration or by someone reconciling orders by hand at the end of the night. That's one more thing that can break during service, and it tends to break when service is busiest.

Take a Friday at 7pm. Online orders come in through the Hungrrr dashboard on a tablet. Counter orders go through the till. If the integration drops, or there isn't one, someone is reading orders off one screen and typing them into another while the queue grows. That's where the mistakes come from: wrong item, missed modifier, an order printed twice.

Flipdish's cloud-based POS sits in the middle of everything. Counter, web, app, kiosk and phone orders all go through it. Staff use one screen. Managers pull one set of reports.

For multi-location operators that means menus managed centrally, the same prices at every site, and reporting across the whole estate in one place. Nobody stitching exports from three systems into a spreadsheet on a Monday morning.

Self-service kiosks

Kiosks are standard now in quick-service and fast casual. Customers browse at their own pace. Upsell prompts on a screen land better than a tired staff member asking "any drinks with that?". The queue moves faster when order-taking moves away from the till. Average order values go up.

Hungrrr doesn't have a kiosk product.

Flipdish's self-service kiosks run in a wide range of restaurant formats in the UK and Ireland. The kiosk looks like the app and the website, so the brand is the same on every screen. Kiosk orders go into the same POS and Kitchen Display System as every other order. There's no separate device fleet to manage and nothing to reconcile.

If kiosks are in your plans, now or later, Hungrrr can't help.

AI phone ordering

Phone orders are still real money for UK and Irish takeaways and delivery restaurants. Answering the phone during peak service takes a person off the line, and orders taken over a loud kitchen get written down wrong. In a lunch rush a lot of calls just don't get answered, and some of those callers will order from somewhere else.

Flipdish's AI phone agent answers those calls. It talks to the caller, takes the order, reads it back and sends it to the kitchen. No member of staff touches it. The order gets taken whether the kitchen is flat out or it's 7pm on a Friday and the phone hasn't stopped.

Hungrrr has nothing like it.

Marketing and customer data

Hungrrr gives you basic promotional tools: discount codes and email notifications. For a simple single-site independent that might be enough.

Flipdish's AI marketing uses order history to run campaigns on its own. A customer who ordered three weeks ago and hasn't been back gets a personalised prompt. Someone who downloaded the app and ordered once gets a nudge to order again. A customer who usually orders on a Friday evening gets an offer on Friday, not on a Tuesday morning when they're not thinking about takeaway.

Nobody has to sit down and build these campaigns. They run in the background using data the platform already has, which suits owners who don't have a spare hour a week for email marketing. The extra revenue they bring in from existing customers is measured, so you can see what it's earning rather than taking it on faith.

Loyalty runs off the same data. Points and rewards show up in the app, they're tied to the customer's order history, and the marketing tools use them. Bolt a separate loyalty product onto a separate ordering product and you end up with two customer lists that never quite match.

Multi-location and franchise operations

Hungrrr can run across a handful of sites. It doesn't have the setup for franchise networks, layered permissions or a large estate.

Flipdish is built for multi-site and franchise operators. Head office manages the menu centrally and pushes changes to every location at once, so a price change or a new item goes live everywhere instead of site by site. Individual sites can still be set up differently where they need to be. Franchisees see their own operational data inside a system head office controls. New locations start from a standard configuration rather than a blank one.

For a franchise operator, that removes a lot of the work of running technology across a growing estate. Flipdish already has franchise relationships across the UK and Ireland and knows how franchise structures affect technology decisions.

Payments

Hungrrr takes payments through a third party. Flipdish has payments built in, so card payments from the website, app, kiosk and counter go through the same system as the orders. When a customer rings to say they were charged twice, there's one place to look. When you reconcile takings at the end of the week, there's one set of figures.

Pricing

Both platforms charge some mix of setup fees and monthly or per-transaction costs. Both quote on request, and the number depends on business size, which products you take and contract length.

The quote isn't the useful comparison. Total cost is. Hungrrr can look cheaper at first because it covers fewer things. But a restaurant on Hungrrr still pays separately for a POS, for any marketing tools, and for whatever connects them. Flipdish puts all of that in one platform: one contract, one support relationship, one price.

Then there's the time. If someone in the business spends hours each week sorting out integrations between systems that don't talk to each other, that's a cost of Hungrrr too. It just doesn't appear on the invoice.

Which should you choose?

Flipdish makes sense if you:

  • want POS and ordering on one platform
  • run more than one site, or plan to
  • want self-service kiosks now or later
  • want phone orders taken without tying up staff
  • want marketing that runs without you feeding it every week
  • run a franchise or plan to
  • would rather have one supplier for the whole lot

Hungrrr can work for a small independent that needs a basic branded app and has no integration needs. It can also work for an operator whose only gap is direct ordering and who already has a separate POS they're happy with.

If you're planning to grow - more sites, more channels, more repeat orders from customers you already have - Flipdish is the better fit. Hungrrr covers one channel. Flipdish covers all of them.
